Two Disasters, One Month

Epoxy flooring in New Hartford often goes into homes and buildings that were repaired or rebuilt after 2008. On May 25 that year, the EF5 tornado that hit Parkersburg crossed the New Hartford area. Including rural homes, 88 houses in and around town were damaged or destroyed, and a granary was lost. About a week later, record flooding forced every resident to evacuate.

Basements in a flood town

New Hartford was prone to flooding until a levee was built around it, and that levee was raised and reinforced in 2009. The levee protects the town from floodwater. It does not change what is under your basement floor. Groundwater, a high water table after heavy rain, or a sump that falls behind can all push moisture up through a slab.

So every basement estimate here starts with a moisture test. Then we choose one of three paths:

  • Dry slab: basement epoxy in solid color, flake or a metallic finish
  • Damp slab: a moisture-tolerant primer under the coating
  • Wet slab: no coating yet. We tell you to deal with the water first.

We also look for old flood marks: mineral crust, stained wall joints and paint that has lifted. A slab that was underwater in 2008 may have contamination in its surface. Grinding removes it so the coating bonds to clean concrete.

Why coat a basement that might flood again?

No coating makes a basement waterproof. A sealed floor does help after a water event. Mud and silt sit on top of resin instead of soaking into bare concrete, so cleanup is faster. A coated floor also dries out sooner and does not hold musty smells the way porous concrete can. If you store things down there, keep them on shelves off the floor either way.

Rural homes and outbuildings

The tornado path ran through the farms around New Hartford, and some rural homes were swept away. Outbuildings and shops replaced after the storm sit on newer slabs. Those floors suit our shop-grade epoxy. It is thicker, tougher and better at handling equipment, fuel and fertilizer drips. Wash areas get grit so the floor is not slick when wet.

Garages in town

New Hartford had 293 housing units in 2020, up from 234 in 2010. The newer homes among them have younger garage slabs. Coating them early keeps winter salt from pitting the concrete. Older garages get crack and floor repair first. For a quick turnaround, or a late-season job, we often use a polyaspartic topcoat.

How an estimate works here

We come out, measure the floor and look at its condition. In a basement we run the moisture test while we are there. In a garage we look at the door strip, the joints and any old coatings. Then you get a written quote that names the system, the prep and one total price. If we find something a coating will not fix, such as water coming through the slab or a section that has heaved, we say so before you spend anything.

New Hartford Questions

Will an epoxy floor stop my New Hartford basement from flooding?

No. A coating is not a waterproofing system. It does make cleanup much easier after water gets in, because silt and mud stay on the surface. If water is coming through the slab, that needs fixing before we coat.

Our basement flooded in 2008. Can it still be coated?

Usually, yes. We grind the slab past any stained or contaminated surface, fill cracks and test for moisture. Then we pick a primer that fits the reading.

Do you coat farm shop floors outside town?

Yes. We coat concrete shop floors, machine sheds and wash bays on farms around New Hartford with shop-grade epoxy and added grit where it gets wet.
